Who Creates NC Data?

The online NC OneMap GIS Inventory, launched in 2006, continues to attract more government participation. A component of the NC OneMap Program, the statewide inventory seeks to include all 100 North Carolina counties and every municipality that creates GIS data for their jurisdiction. The NC OneMap GIS Inventory offers an online catalog of GIS data produced by government agencies (and others) as well as a Who’s Who in GIS in our state. The inventory can be updated at any time.

If you are a data producer, register to create your user and organizational profile. Then, enter information about the data sets your agency/organization produces. Please use the free text field to provide a few words of description for each unique data set — it is helpful to others. Do you have Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) compliant metadata? If not, the inventory gives you a great start with an automatic metadata building block. Just click on the “Publish Metadata” button for each data set you inventory, and there it is. Simple!

You do not need to log-on or be a registered data producer to use the inventory. Anyone can use the status maps featured on the inventory home page. Quickly check for existing (or planned) data and get details on almost 500 data themes. One click of the mouse and you can see which counties, cities, and/or state agencies produce a particular data theme. A second click of the mouse using the “I”dentify tool reveals data details and contact information.

Need a contact?

Use the Directory feature on the home page to search for a contact by organization, location, or alphabetical listing. This feature puts you in touch with the data producers.
We Are Not Alone

The NC OneMap GIS Inventory uses the RAMONA tool developed by the National States Geographic Information Council (NSGIC) to inventory GIS data holdings of tribal, state, and local governments, and their partners. It provides one consistent platform for the nation that is designed to work in concert with the federal Geospatial One-Stop (GOS) portal. GOS, a metadata clearinghouse operated by Federal Geographic Data Committee, will automatically harvest the metadata building blocks generated in the NC OneMap GIS Inventory.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency funded the development and maintenance of this inventory.
